The first year of your pet's life sets the foundation for lifelong health. We're here to help you start strong.
Based on AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) guidelines
| Age | Vaccines |
|---|---|
| 6-8 weeks | DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) |
| 10-12 weeks | DHPP booster, Bordetella (if boarding/grooming) |
| 12 weeks | Leptospirosis (first dose) - core vaccine in Illinois |
| 14-16 weeks | DHPP booster, Rabies (required by law), Leptospirosis (second dose), Lyme (if lifestyle warrants) |
Puppies should be dewormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age, then monthly until 6 months old. We'll recommend ongoing parasite prevention after that.
Growing puppies need puppy-formulated food until they're fully grown (12 months for most breeds, 18-24 months for large/giant breeds). We'll help you choose the right food.
The socialization window (3-14 weeks) is critical. Expose your puppy to new people, places, and experiences safely. We can guide you on safe socialization before vaccines are complete.
The ideal timing varies by breed, size, and individual factors. We'll discuss the best timing for your specific puppy during your visits.
Based on AAFP (American Association of Feline Practitioners) guidelines
| Age | Vaccines |
|---|---|
| 6-8 weeks | FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) |
| 10-12 weeks | FVRCP booster |
| 14-16 weeks | FVRCP booster, Rabies (required by law) |
| 8+ weeks | FeLV (Feline Leukemia) - for cats going outdoors |
Kittens should be dewormed at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, then monthly until 6 months. Indoor cats still need regular parasite prevention.
Indoor cats live longer, healthier lives. If your cat will go outside, we'll discuss additional vaccines (FeLV) and more frequent parasite prevention.
Feed kitten-formulated food until 12 months of age. Cats are obligate carnivores and need high-protein diets. We can recommend appropriate foods.
Most kittens learn quickly. One litter box per cat plus one extra, in quiet locations. If you have issues, we can help troubleshoot.
Young pets can deteriorate quickly. Contact us right away if you notice:
