Dr. Laura Li grew up in beautiful Byron, IL. She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Augustana College, and her veterinary medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2015.


Dr. Joshua Li joined Highland Pet Hospital in June 2015 as a part-time veterinarian. A New Jersey native, he earned degrees from Rutgers (Animal Science) and the University of Illinois (DVM). His interests include large and small animal medicine, surgery, imaging, and emergency care, with international experience. Outside work, he enjoys time with his wife Laura, cooking, and basketball.

Dr. Patti Niehm joined Highland Pet Hospital on June 1, 1991. An Ohio native and NC State veterinary graduate, she previously worked at Calumet Emergency Veterinary Clinic. Her interests include neurology, dermatology, pharmacology, and feline care. She values strong pet–family relationships, serves on multiple veterinary boards, and enjoys biking, camping, and the outdoors.

Dr. Kim Burks grew up in small towns surrounding the Bloomington-Normal area. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University in 2003. Dr. Burks completed a small animal medical and surgical internship at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. She furthers her veterinary education by attending seminars, taking on-line classes, and reading veterinary journals. She has obtained certification in veterinary acupuncture from the Colorado State Veterinary Med

Dr. Torry Steffen joined Highland in 2005. He earned his BS (1993) and DVM (1997) from the University of Illinois and previously worked at a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital in Indiana. His interests include emergency medicine, surgery, dentistry, and internal medicine. Outside work, he enjoys reading, running, family time, and church.


Dr. Metz grew up on a farm in Fairbury, IL, earned her undergraduate degree at Eastern Illinois University, and her DVM from the University of Illinois in 2011. She joined the Animal Emergency Clinic in 2018 and Highland Pet Hospital in 2021, working part-time at both. Her interests include preventative care and soft tissue surgery. Outside work, she enjoys family time, baking, and the outdoors.
